But, if you are one of those, who just want to kick start their career in gaming industry, this guide will tell you how to go for it. People tend to think of gaming as a timepass, even when all the giants of software industry are leaning towards this option. So, if you are one of those, then sorry to say, but this industry is not for you. Gaming industry seeks out for the geeks, or gaming enthusiasts. Obviously, playing games is not enough to make a career in this industry. But it always helps.
So, lets begin with the type of opportunities that one can grab in this industry. Basically there are three types of categories of people who are related to the development of any successful game.
- Developers :- These are typical software engineers, with a lots of knowledge on programming, and mathematics. These guys develop the basic structure of the game called the game engine, which is like creating a rough draft of how the user is gonna interact with the environment, and how the environment will react to it. Apart from this, these guys also develop code for the online components. The basic requirement for this category is to have deep understanding of the programming language and mathematics. SInce these guys have to create code that is to be used for multiple gaming platforms, basic knowledge of the internal structure of these platforms is essential. Apart from that, experience with modding the game code is a plus. These guys are supposed to work on very tight schedule, so working overnights for weeks, is expected. Companies prefer to work with those guys who had prior experience with gaming industry, so work experience plays a very important role.
- Designers :- These guys are artists by nature. Their job is to design the characters, maps, artworks, storyline, clothings etc. This job does not require any programming skills as such, because the work is totally about designs. A better understanding of what users like to see in a game, is a must. For example, in a racing game, design of car and surroundings are important, while in first-person shooter, guns and explosions are important. Designers tend to work for only one genre of games, as they have prior experience designing the same earlier. These guys usually are true gaming enthusiats, those who love to get hands-on every single game, just to see the visuals. To be a designer, again experience plays a key role. Apart from that, you need a proper training on designing tools, like photoshop, Maya etc. Since these guys design the rough draft of the visuals, being innovative is considered a skill set.
- Engineers :- This category consists of all those people who actually creates the memorable experience out of the designer’s ideas. Animation, audio effects, visual effects, gameplay design, map design, testing, are few of the tasks that this category deals with. Again the people in this category needs to be innovative, and artists. These guys make sure that the designer’s work matches with the constraints that developers are supposed to face. So, a basic knowledge of programming language comes handy, although is not at all essential to be one of these guys. Being trained on corresponding tools and technologies is basic requirement for this kind of job. As a starter, this category is the best place to start a career in gaming, since experience is not the key requirement for this category. Also, switching to any other category at a later point of time is easier too.
The basic point to start a career in gaming, is to identify the type of work, you can deal with easily.
