Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y-series Y650 is its first 16-inch widescreen laptop the thinnest and lightest laptop in its class1, made up of  materials like carbon fiber, that materials used in the aerospace and automotive industries, with a weight of just 5.6 pounds. The new Convertible Classmate is a tablet PC, with a touch screen that swivels to make data input easier. Intel will show prototypes of the laptop at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to be held in Las Vegas between Jan. 8 and 11. Intel bills the Classmate as an educational laptop for kids in developing countries, but it will also be available in the general market. The touch-screen interface makes software more interactive and easier for kids to use, Intel said.

The Classmate is a reference design created by Intel, but the laptops are actually shipped by PC makers throughout the world. PC makers will discuss their plans to ship Convertible Classmate products at CES, an Intel spokeswoman said on Wednesday. Laptops built by using the reference design will become available in early 2009.

The new laptop has a clamshell design with an 8.9-inch screen. Input of data can be done either through a stylus or by touch. There is an option to rest palms on the touch screen while inputting data. The laptop has a number of other bells and whistles, including an accelerometer that changes the display’s orientation horizontally or vertically depending on the laptop’s position.

The Convertible Classmate will run on an Intel Atom processor and come loaded with either the Windows or Linux OS.

Intel’s APD has a gain-bandwidth product of 340GHz, the best result ever reported for an APD & able to address bandwidth needs of data-intensive computing applications. Silicon Photonics will provide substantial size, cost, and power savings over traditional optical communication solutions.

According to Intel enterprise group vice president Tom Kilroy -

The six-core chip delivers 48-50 percent more performance than its quad-core predecessor while using 10 percent less electric power, “It isn’t just performance and energy efficiency but the use models.

Intel has introduced with seven versions or stock keeping units (SKUs) at launching:

• Introduced 3 six-core versions and 4 are quad-core,
• Cores can access up to 16MB of shared L3 cache,
• Offer frequencies up to 2.66GHz at 130W,
• Two low-power versions that save power, require only 50W for the quad-core, and 65W for the six-core.

Why six-core chip? Chips developed for server machines are very costly more than $1k, its approximately 10 times of the average price of PC processors. Intel developed processor that have multiple cores, means the greater number of tasks it can perform simultaneously. normally we have majority of two cores chips and more expensive models employ four.

Kilroy said, VP and GM of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group -

“With new features such as additional cores, large shared caches and advanced virtualization technologies, the Xeon 7400 series delivers record-breaking performance that will lead enterprises into the next wave of virtualization deployments.”
