How To Use Analytics for Twitter

Perform Twitter Search

1. Open the "Analytics for Twitter.xlsx" file on your desktop.
2. Enter a maximum of 5 comma delimited search queries in the search pane located at the top of the "Topics", "People", "Tone" or "Details" worksheets. See the Twitter Search Syntax section for more information on the search syntax. You only need to enter your search term once to populate all the worksheets. For your convenience, the search pane is located at the top of each sheet.
3. Click the search icon to retrieve Twitter search queries.
4. Wait for the "Twitter Search Complete" message box.
5. Click OK.
6. Wait for the "Next Steps" message box. If a "Twitter Search Query Clipped" message box precedes this message, note the message and consider refining the affected search query.
7. Click OK.

Refresh the data

1. On the PowerPivot tab in Excel, click "Update All".
2. Wait until PowerPivot Window has refreshed.
3. Close or minimize the PowerPivot Window.
4. On the Data tab in Excel click "Refresh All".

Tone Dictionary
The Tone Score is calculated based off of the user defined tone dictionary. This dictionary maps keywords to a tone index which is a sliding scale from very positive to very negative. Users can modify the dictionary to meet the needs of their specific search topic.

1. On the Tone Dictionary worksheet in Excel, modify the dictionary terms in the right hand column.
2. Repeat Perform Twitter Search and Refresh Data steps. The Tone Score is calculated as part of the search query process, thus in order to capture dictionary updates the search must be performed after tone dictionary updates.

Search Query Syntax
Analytics for Twitter has been designed to support up to 5 concurrent search queries on #hashtags, @mentions, keywords and Tweeters. The search operators’ syntax follows Twitter Search syntax see http://search.twitter.com/operators. The following examples outline several sample search scenarios.

Limitations

• Twitter search queries are limited to the past 4 – 7 days and a maximum of 1500 tweets per day.

  Analytics for Twitter works with latest version of Microsoft Office Excel 2010 and Microsoft PowerPivot for Excel 2010. Analytics for Twitter takes advantage of Twitter Search (http://search.twitter.com/). During periods of high traffic volume Twitter Search does not always return search results. Please be patient and try your search again.

As Windows Phone and Android phones uses different architecture and platform, so it  is not possible for Microsoft to have mapping for all of the API’s. Venkat Padmanabhan, principal researcher at Microsoft Research India Said

Desktop computers are idle for a lot of time, because users are not constantly using the computer, and are frequently away for short intervals. A study at the Microsoft lab, for example, revealed that computers at the lab are idle for about 70 to 80 percent of the time. The user’s desktop computing environment is virtualized by encapsulating it in a virtual machine which is migrated between the physical desktop and a backend virtual machine server, depending on whether the desktop is being actively used or idle. The idle virtual machines will continue to run on the server, without disrupting the network connectivity or other background compute activities like downloads. The technology is already deployed at Microsoft Research India with some 12 users testing it. It can be scaled to a wide-area network and the virtual machine server hosted in a cloud, provided there exists enough bandwidth to enable the quick movement of the virtual machines between the desktops and the server

Ramachandran Ramjee,  principal researcher at Microsoft Research India Said,

It is not the case that energy is consumed by a PC in proportion to its use. Users are however reluctant to put their PCs to sleep when they are away from their desks for a coffee break or a meeting, because that would break long-running network connections such as log-in sessions, IM presence and file sharing, or background computations such as the syncing and automatic filing of new mails, according to the researchers. In some cases, users also want to keep their machines reachable remotely. When a user returns to a machine that has been put to sleep, the machine is woken up from sleep, and the user is able to access in about 10 seconds his desktop environment through a remote desktop connection to the desktop virtual machine running on the virtual machine server. The desktop virtual machine is subsequently migrated back to the user’s physical desktop machine without the user even noticing, in about one minute in a typical LAN environment.

Microsoft Research India is now working on the compression algorithms and redundancy elimination that will enable the virtual machines to be transferred to and from the back-end server more quickly.

The lab declined to comment on the commercialization of the technology, as its focus is on research, rather than business decisions.

3. Tabbed Conversations for Microsoft Lync 2010 : Tabbed Conversations is an application that provides a tabbed Lync 2010 conversation window to allow multiple instant messaging (IM) conversations in a single window.

4. Conversations Analyzer for Microsoft Lync 2010 : Conversations Analyzer is an application that reviews your Microsoft Lync instant messaging (IM) conversation history and gives you scores for your use of trust-building language in day-to-day communications with business associates and friends. Conversations Analyzer applies trust rules to determine the occurrence of words and phrases that have a positive or negative effect on trust.

5. Conversation Translator Add-In for Microsoft Lync 2010 : Conversation Translator provides a real-time language translation service for Lync instant messaging (IM) conversations. With Conversation Translator, both the sender and receiver can converse in their native language, and Conversation Translator handles the translation.
