The Microsoft Office Outlook team has released a series of cumulative updates to improve performance and reliability. Outlook team consolidated all these updates into a single package. This update contains a significant number of new performance-focused improvements for Outlook users. After installing these updates, Outlook users will definitely feel a high level of performance improvement in Outlook 2007.

Outlook team especially focused on the areas of starting up and shutting down Outlook, switching between folders with large numbers of messages, calendar reliability and consistency, and general responsiveness of the application when performing common tasks around managing your e-mail, calendar, and other information. In short, we believe your daily experience with Outlook will be greatly improved with the installation of this Cumulative Update.

The Most important change is made in local storage engine of Outlook. Both Personal Folders files (PSTs) and Cached Exchange Stores (OSTs) are built upon the same underlying storage engine. Outlook update improved the general reading and writing characteristics of the PST so that less is demanded from the disk to perform the same general operations in Outlook.

POP and IMAP users will noticed that Outlook retrieve most newest mails first. IMAP mail users will notice that downloading message bodies no longer stops Outlook from responding to additional user commands.

Immediately after you install the SP2 update, the first startup of Outlook will not be fast because Outlook must update internal PST data structures that are used in our optimizations. This is a one-time cost, however, and it affects just the initial startup.

The responsiveness of Outlook will improve after this dialog box closes. If you choose to create a new profile and resynchronize your mail, the storage upgrade happens dynamically as new content is added to your new local data file.

On November 18,2008 Microsoft has announced that, they are planning to offer a new consumer security offering focused on core anti-malware protection. This solution will be offer to consumers at no charge. Code-named “Morro,” this streamlined solution will be available in the second half of 2009 and will provide comprehensive protection from malware including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. This new solution will be developed in such a way that it will use less computing resources and ideal for low-bandwidth scenarios. Microsoft also announced that it will discontinue retail sales of its Windows Live OneCare subscription service effective June 30, 2009.

“Morro” will take the full advantage of Microsoft’s award winning anti-malware protection technology. Microsoft’s current anti-malware protection technology currently powering most of the companies security products. Microsoft anti-malware technology have received the VB100 award from Virus Bulletin, Checkmark Certification from West Coast Labs and certification from the International Computer Security Association Labs. The new solution will deliver the same core protection against malware as that offered through Microsoft’s enterprise solutions, but will not include many of the additional non-security features found in many consumer security suites.

Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management for the Online Services and Windows Division at Microsoft, Said

Customers around the world have told us that they need comprehensive, ongoing protection from new and existing threats, and we take that concern seriously. This new, no-cost offering will give us the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware.

Roger Kay, founder and president of Endpoint Technologies Associates, Said

Because uptake of standard anti-malware is low around the world, particularly in developing nations, the availability of basic protection for anyone who wants it is all the more important. By offering such basic protection at no charge to the consumer, Microsoft is promoting a safer environment for PCs, service providers and e-commerce itself, since it is through unprotected PCs that the worst threats are introduced to the system as a whole.

“Morro” will be available as a stand-alone download and offer malware protection for the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. Windows Live OneCare will continue to be sold for Windows XP and Windows Vista at retail through June 30, 2009. Direct sales of OneCare will be gradually phased out when “Morro” becomes available. Regardless of their method of purchase.

On November 17,2008 Sun has released the latest version of it’s office productivity suite that is StarOffice 9. StarOffice 9.0 comes with the native support for Mac OS X. Star Office 9.0 is developed on top of Open Office 3.0. StarOffice 9.0 uses Mozilla’s Thunderbird email client and Lightning extension for calendaring as part of its distribution. The suite includes many extensions that make it easier to perform common tasks such as editing PDF files, creating reports, blogging, and publishing wikis.

Jonathan Eunice, Founder and Principal IT Adviser, Said

With every release, StarOffice becomes a more powerful, effective productivity tool. The latest, StarOffice 9, is especially notable for how well it deals with various file formats. In addition to its native ISO-standard Open Document Format, it has strong support for Microsoft Office both legacy and new OOXML files — and for PDF, which can now be imported and edited.

Jim Parkinson, Vice President, Developer, Tools and Services at Sun Microsystems, Inc. Said

In the more than 25 years that I’ve worked in the computer industry, I don’t know when I’ve been as proud as I am today — with the release of StarOffice 9.0 . The StarOffice engineering teams and OpenOffice.org community have come together to produce a first-class product. With the new features in 9.0, businesses get an open standards-based, enterprise-class office productivity suite that is compatible with Microsoft Office but costs significantly less. With its ability to read MS Office Open XML files, support for MS Access 2007 .accdb files and improved VBA macro support, StarOffice 9 is a great option for companies looking to reduce their IT costs in these tough economic times.

StarOffice 9 is completely open sourced, with the same binaries as OpenOffice.org 3.0. In this release, StarOffice has a fresh new look, with a new start center, new icons and a host of usability improvements. Many new features
