Microsoft Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0 provides the ability to synchronize data from disparate sources. Rather than simply replicating a database and its schema, the Synchronization Services application programming interface (API) provides a set of components to synchronize data between data services and a local store. Applications are increasingly used on mobile clients, such as laptops and devices that do not have a consistent or reliable network connection to a central server. It is crucial for these applications to work against a local copy of data on the client. Equally important is the need to synchronize the local copy of the data with a central server when a network connection is available. The Synchronization Services API, which is modeled after the ADO.NET data access APIs, gives you an intuitive way to synchronize data. It makes building applications for occasionally connected environments a logical extension of building applications where you can count on a consistent network connection.

Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0, which released with Visual Studio 2008, enabled synchronization between a server database and a SQL Compact 3.5 client database running on a desktop. With this download, you can also synchronize between a server database and a SQL Compact database on a Windows Mobile 5 or 6 device.

System Requirements

Microsoft Synchronization Services for ADO.NET requires ADO.NET 2.0 on the server. Synchronization Services requires .NET Compact Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2) for device clients. The server database can be any database for which an ADO.NET provider is available, such as SQL Server 2005. The client database for Synchronization Services applications is SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 1 and later versions.
Synchronization Services is supported on the following device operating systems:

• Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0
• Windows CE 5.0 and 6.0

Installation Instruction

Download and run SyncServices.MSI. The Synchronization Services runtime binaries and cabs will be installed under %Programfiles%\Microsoft Synchronization Services\ADO.NET\v1.0\Devices.
Install the following products if they are not already installed:

• Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0 x86 (released with both SQL Server Compact 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008) must be installed on the database server or middle-tier server. It is required for server components, such as Server Synchronization Provider.
• SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 must be installed on the device.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2008 Sun Microsystems has released source code of its xVM server virtualization software and commercial version of xVM will be available by next month. xVM Server can virtualizes Windows, Linux and Sun’s own Solaris operating system on x86 hardware from such vendors as Sun, HP, IBM and Dell. Before this release Sun Microsystems server virtualization focuses only to their server operating systems.

xVM server virtualization software comes with a embedded web server , allowing users to access management console through web browser. Sun is hoping that open source version of its xVM server virtualization software will attract more developers towards their virtualization software platform and at the same also enhance the xVM Server management layer.

Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta is an application that is designed to take away the worry of losing data on your phone - specifically contacts, music, pictures and videos. It does that by synchronizing your phone contacts with Microsoft’s Windows Live Contacts store in the cloud, or by helping you download files from the phone to your local computer.

• Contacts: Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta synchronizes the contacts present in your phone with your contact store on Windows Live Contacts, which is the same store that your Hotmail contacts uses. This way, your phone contacts are always present on the Internet, accessible via the contacts link on Hotmail. If you lose, or simply change your phone, all you need to do is to synchronize the contacts using Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta, and all the contacts that you stored in your Windows Live Contacts store will be downloaded to your phone. You can synchronize your contacts as many times as you like so that the changes you make (edits, additions or deletions) on your phone, or on the computer on Windows Live Contacts are always reflected on both your phone and the Windows Live Contacts store.
• Music, Pictures and Video: In its current form, Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta will download the music, pictures and videos present in your phone to a local folder on the computer you are using this application on.
• Communication with your phone: Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta can communicate with your phone via a wireless standard known as Bluetooth, or via a USB cable.
• In order for you to synchronize contacts, you will need to have a Windows Live ID (any Hotmail ID is a valid Windows Live ID). If you do not have one, you will be prompted to create one while you use the application.

Your computer needs to have the following minimum requirements for Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta application to run:

• One of the following Operating Systems:

• 256 MB of RAM
• 200 MB of available disk space

• Bluetooth Connectivity: In order for the application to communicate with your phone through Bluetooth, your computer needs to either have inbuilt Bluetooth hardware support (e.g. most laptops have Bluetooth inbuilt), or you should have an external USB Bluetooth dongle that you can use. • USB Connectivity: If you choose to use a USB cable to connect your phone with the PC, then
  1. you should use a USB data cable that works with your phone, and
  2. your computer should have the latest available USB cable drivers for your phone (provided by your phone manufacturer) installed.

System Bluetooth requirements

Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that connects computers, mobile phones and other electronic devices and allows them to communicate wirelessly over short distances. Many computers (especially laptops) come with the Bluetooth functionality pre-installed.If your computer/laptop does not have pre-installed Bluetooth functionality, you may be able to buy a USB-based Bluetooth dongle that will provide Bluetooth functionality for your computer.

The Phone Data Manager Beta application works only with those Bluetooth dongles/adapters that are compatible with the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack. If your dongle supports Microsoft’s Bluetooth stack then once you insert the dongle, the computer will recognize and automatically install the required drivers when you plug in the dongle into the USB slot (without needing any additional dongle vendor provided CD)

• If you are using Windows Vista, ensure that your dongle is on the list of Bluetooth dongles that work with Windows Vista and are also compatible with the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack.
• If you are using Windows XP, ensure that your dongle is on the list of Bluetooth dongles that work with Windows XP and are also compatible with the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack.

In case your Bluetooth dongle is not automatically recognized by Windows XP or Windows Vista then please refer to troubleshooting information on how to configure a Bluetooth dongle.

Apple released QuickTime 7.5.5 and Front Row 2.1.6 today. Both of these updates were made available immediately after today’s presentation by Steve Jobs via the Software Update system preference for Mac.  These updates are required prior to installing the new iTunes 8 software. According to Apple, QuickTime 7.5.5 is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users. The update includes the usual vague Apple references to: changes that increase reliability, improve application compatibility and enhance security.

The new version has bug fixes and is designed to have improved iTunes 8 compatibility. Front Row is Apple’s application that allows users to manipulate and view A/V content on an Intel Mac with the Apple remote control Front Row requires -

• Mac OS X 10.5 or later.
• QuickTime 7.5.5. or later.
• iTunes 6.0.4 or later
• iPhoto 6.0.2 or later.

Today, Realnetwork, the digital media company in Seattle, will introduce RealDVD, a $30 software program for Windows computers that allows users to easily make a digital copy of an entire DVD. RealNetworks Inc. is a creator of digital media services and software such as Rhapsody, RealArcade and RealPlayer.

Robert Glaser, chief executive of RealNetworks said

Its a compelling and very responsible product that gives consumers a way to do something they have always wanted to do, like make backup copies of favorite discs and take movies with them on their laptops when they travel. RealDVD will have widespread appeal, and he is already pondering its future. He says the software could eventually work across home networks and play movies on televisions, instead of just computer screens.

The software will be available for sale on Real.com and Amazon.com this month, will allow buyers to make one copy of a DVD, playable only on the computer where it was made. The user can transfer that copy to up to five other Windows computers, but only by buying additional copies of the software for $20 each. The software does not work on high-definition Blu-ray discs, which the movie industry has even more aggressively sought to protect from illicit copying.

SyncToy helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers quickly and easily. SyncToy 2.0 for Windows is available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center. The easy to use, customizable application helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers.

There are files from all kinds of sources that we want to store and manage. Files are created by our digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store, manage, retrieve and view files. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to regularly get copies of files from another location to add to primary location; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping track of whether the locations are synchronized in their heads. Other users may use two or more applications to provide this functionality.

Now there is an easier way. SyncToy, a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows, is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories. Most common operations can be performed with just a few clicks of the mouse, and additional customization is available without additional complexity. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another case. Unlike other applications, SyncToy actually keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder.

We have collected feedback from the discussion forum on the Windows XP Professional Photography web site, from customer feedback surveys, from a large number of professional and hobbyist photographers at Microsoft, and from various world-wide forums, sites, reviews and blogs on the web. Based on your feedback, the following features were added to this release of SyncToy:

• Dynamic Drive Letter Assignment: Drive letter reassignment will now be detected and updated in the folder pair definition.
• True Folder Sync: Folder creates, renames and deletes are now synchronized for all SyncToy actions.
• Exclusion Filtering Based on Name: File exclusion based on name with exact or fuzzy matching.
• Filtering Based on File Attributes: The ability to exclude files based on one or more file attributes (Read-Only, System, Hidden).
• Unattended Folder Pair Execution: Addressed issues related to running scheduled folder pairs while logged off.
• Folder Pairs With Shared Endpoints: Ability for folder pairs associated with the same or different instances of SyncToy to share end-points.
• Command line enhancements: Added the ability to manage folder pairs via the command line interface.
• Re-Architect Sync Engine: The SyncToy engine has been rearchitected to provide scalability and the ability to add significant enhancements in future releases.
• Sync engine is also more robust insomuch that many single, file level errors are skipped without affecting the entire sync operation.
• Sync Encrypted Files: Sync of Encrypted files works when local folder and files are encrypted, which addresses the common scenario involving sync between local, encrypted laptop PC folder and remote, unencrypted desktop PC folder.
• 64-Bit Support: SyncToy now has a native 64-bit build (x64 only) for 64-bit versions of Windows.

• Sub-folder Exclusion Enhancements: Descendents created under excluded sub-folders are automatically excluded. Usability improvements for the sub-folder exclusion dialog.
