Microsoft is well known for making software’s including office and operating systems. Microsoft was never into the hardware business for their software’s. Now they are entering into a new business mode that is making hardware for Windows 8 tablet devices.

At a press event in Los Angeles today, Microsoft today unveiled Surface, a line of tablet devices running the company’s next-generation Windows operating system.

Two models of Surface will be available: one running an ARM processor featuring Windows RT, and one with a third-generation Intel Core processor featuring Windows 8 Pro. Surface for Windows RT will release with the general availability of Windows 8, and the Windows 8 Pro model will be available about 90 days later. Both will be sold in the Microsoft Store locations in the U.S. and available through select online Microsoft Stores.

Surface sports a full-sized USB port and a 16:9 aspect ratio – the industry standard for HD. It has edges angled at 22 degrees, a natural position for the PC at rest or in active use, letting the hardware fade into the background and the software stand out.

At D9 conference Microsoft demonstrated their next version of Windows operating system, code named “Windows 8”. Windows 8 is a reimagining of Windows, from the chip to the interface. A Windows 8-based PC is really a new kind of device, one that scales from touch-only small screens through to large screens, with or without a keyboard and mouse.

The demo showed some of the way Microsoft redesigned Windows8 user interface. Here are the top 10 publicly announced or rumored features of Windows8.

ARM Processor Support : At 2011 international CES 2011, Microsoft announced that the next version of Windows will support System on a Chip (SoC) architectures, including ARM-based systems from partners NVIDIA Corp., Qualcomm Inc. Microsoft also demonstrated the next version of Windows running on new SoC platforms from Intel running on x86 architecture and from NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments on ARM architecture.

Internet Explorer 10 : Recently Microsoft released Internet Explorer 9 and according to softpedia, Internet Explorer 10 will ship with Windows 8. Internet Explorer will support fully touch-optimized browsing, with all the power of hardware-accelerated Internet Explorer 10.

Cloud Integration : The new tile based users interface might have integration with a range of cloud services including App Store, Windows Live, SkyDrive, Mesh, Twitter and Facebook. Apart from these cloud features, Windows 8 might allows users to sync their Windows and mobile devices remotely.

Built In PDF Reader : Windows 8 may have its own PDF reader and some people calling this reader as modern PDF reader. The PDF reader application will be a very simple application allowing you to view PDFs in full fidelity, as you’d expect. You can zoom in and out, and there’s a page scrubber on the side of the application window for document navigation.

Ribbon User Interface : With the release of Office 2007, Microsoft introduced ribbon interface and it looks like they are slowly extending ribbon interface to other products including office 2010. So it is expected that Windows 8 may have a ribbon interface instead of legacy user interface.

Full Multi-Touch Support : The demo showed at D9 showed some of the ways Microsoft reimagined the interface for a new generation of touch-centric hardware. Fast, fluid and dynamic, the experience has been transformed while keeping the power, flexibility and connectivity of Windows intact.

File Download Verification : With the release of Internet Explorer 9, SmartScreen Filter helps notify you when you attempt to download software – like malware – that is potentially unsafe. Furthermore, the new Download Manager will provide an added layer of security for files you’ve downloaded from the web; it makes several security-related checks on downloads such as scanning for viruses and verifying the location that the file came from. It seems Microsoft will extend this technology to Windows eco system.

App Store : The demo showed at D9 conference highlight following features related to Windows 8 Apps

Fast launching of apps from a tile-based Start screen, which replaces the Windows Start menu with a customizable, scalable full-screen view of apps.

Live tiles with notifications, showing always up-to-date information from your apps.

Fluid, natural switching between running apps.

Convenient ability to snap and resize an app to the side of the screen, so you can really multitask using the capabilities of Windows.

Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC.

Above features gives a clear idea that Windows 8 will support new kind of applications developed using HTML 5 and JavaScript and Windows 8 users may have to download these apps from Microsoft App Store.
