Medical services in rural India suffers from shortage of doctors. To address this issue, The Union Health Ministry came up with a new solution. Now they will offer a new course called Bachelor of Rural Medicine and Surgery. The course would be offer in three-and-half-year shorter than normal MBBS course and will not have any specialization. The Medical Council of India is currently working on the syllabus, and the first batch will be recruited next year.
Dr Ketan Desai, president of the Medical Council of India, Said
The students will not have to sit for a medical entrance examination, instead they will be selected from primary health centres on the basis of marks obtained in Class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as subjects. Weightage will be given to those who have studied in village schools. The merit list will be drawn from these schools and not from metropolitan cities. As of now, we have decided that these students will work in primary health centres for the first year so that they have first-hand experience. The second year will be spent in a district hospital and the third year in a tertiary hospital. To begin with, 50 students will be enrolled. For five years after finishing training, these doctors will practice only in areas which have a population of less than 50,000. "For five years, they will not be eligible for post-graduate courses. After that, they will be at par with other doctors. Then they can go to the city and pursue PG studies
Why Govt is appointing BRHM cours while there are a lot of unemployed BAMS doctors,Who have better knowledge. Why govt.is not giving them permission of Modern practice specially in West Bengal.
sir i m urban boy.can i appear this.there shud be chance 4 urban boy as well as rural boy
give me confirmed answer.n when it will start.when will we get application form
though this is definitely a plan with good intentions at heart, there are a lot of apprehensions about it.
1.from where will the govt. find so much capital to start off new institutions in rural areas?
2.isnt it unfair to make BRMS graduates at par with MBBS graduates even after 5 years of service?
at the same time i wonder how genuine are the arguments about creating a sub standard healthcare system for rural india…rural india already has a sub std. system cos of the shortage of doctors and the no. of quacks who are abundant in these areas…
may be introducing compulsory rural service after MBBS and PG as well as improving the living conditions in villages might help to some extent..
Sir,instead of giving new admissions better to think of ayur.,hoeopath &others which are eligible & all ready practicing in rural area. They will definately prove themself. Some of them could not do mbbs cause of money or no private college in that area.SO HUMBLE REQUEST-”give us a chance to grow up & prove us once again”
According to the latest Supreme court judgement, crosspathy is illegal and punishable,No Homeopath, Ayurvedic docs, etc can practice modern medicine.
If they do so they are nothing less than quacks. Government can post them for administrative positions in chcs and phcs, they are legally not allowed to prescribe or administer modern medicine drugs.
This BRMS course is an absurd concept. There cannot be 2 qualities of doctors.
It should be given some name as healthworker and not doctors.
If anybody can become a doctor in 3yrs and also eligible for postgraduation, nobody will like to waste 6 yrs in MBBS.
Quality is most important, it should not be diluted at any cost.
This political concept needs to be challenged in the court of Law.
Hello Jayanta Bhowmick,
of which judgement of supreme court you are talking about..?
BAMS is a course of integrated system of medicine, we have studied modern medicine & are legally authorized to prescribe the modern medicine.
read out the following page
http://nimaptd.webs.com/legaldiscussion.htm
don’t make vague statements.
National Integrated medical Association Association
An ayuvedic vaid (and not doctor) can only prescribe certain essential basic Modern medicine ( lay man term: Allopathy) drugs if a State allows so.
Go through These links of the judgements:
http://www.aiclindia.com/judgements_trend.asp
And It is a common sense and logic too How can a vaid presribe or administer a modern medicine drug whose pharmacology he has not studied and passed the exam? The same thing obviosly applies to the modern medicine practitioners they cannot prescribe ayurvedic drugs in whose pharmacology they are not qualified . Understanding this simple thing does not require the brains of Einstein I think.
Dear Raju,
there is a difference between BAMS Doctors & Ayurvedic vaids.
pls read out the article
True scenario Of Indian Medical Eduction exposed
http://nimaptd.webs.com/editorspick.htm
given the opportunity BAMS PRACTITIONERS CAN PROVE THEMSELVES & COULD BE SPECIALISTS & SUPER SPECIALISTS IN MAIN STREAM MEDICINE..
they are bright students & practitioners from rural back ground..
try to understand the reality & don’t make vague comments
NATIONAL INTEGRATED MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
there is no need to start new (BRHC) course because BHMS doctors are sufficientto give the health care in rural areas in india
I am interesting in opening a BRMS institute in village of Moradabad U.P. already running an ITI college for Rurl students NGO and Inter colleges in Villages. I need Guidelines and consultants
Even BAMS (so called doctors) are also not qualified and have not passed pharmacology of Modern medicine and thus not eligible to prescribe or administer them( other than some basic drugs) if a state desires so.They cannot superspecialise in modern medicine( layman: Allopathy) , although they can pursue postgraduation in their system of medicine.
NATIONALIZE ALL THE PRIVATE MEDICAL COLLEGES & UPGRADE ALL EXISTING BAMS/BHMS/BUMS COLLEGES TO MBBS & PROVIDE UNIFORM MEDICAL DEGREE IN INDIA
We hereby request to
Hon,President of India,
Hon,Prime minister of India,
Hon, Health Minister of India
& All the Hon, MP’s from Rajyasabha & Loksabha
to seriously think on “Nationalization of Medical Education”…
1)Medical Education should be on the top of priority list of Govt of India..
Privatization of medical education started in 1953,
& now every big politician owns a Medical college & sugar factory.
those who cant own medical college, own BAMS or BHMS colleges..
management quota seats are literally sold.
Medical Education is now market, where those who have lot of money can get admissions
Truly worthy students are deprived from getting medical education, in this Bazar.
Those who invest money for education naturally tries to put out the invested money with interest, they are going to accept freebies & gifts from the Pharma companies, no matter MCI’s Ketan Desai bans it.
True Medical professional needs Empathy, Emotions & Ethics in his heart.
Privatization of Medical Education kept all these words into dictionary
2)Upgrade all the existing BAMS/BHMS/BUMS/BSMS colleges to MBBS & provide them with necessary infrastructure.
Existing BAMS/BHMS/BUMS/BSMS practitioners should be upgraded to MBBS by offering them refreshing course in medicine & pharmacology through CME centers at Taluka/Tehsil level. The CME centers at Taluka/Tehsil level should be provided with recent advances in technology like video conferencing.
3) Government’s job is to provide/ensure proper health care to it’s citizens & not to promote the different pathies, hence AYUSH dept. & CCIM & CCH should be scrapped.
& Uniform scientific medical syllabus should be offered in the Nation,Ayurveda, unani & siddha would be offered as optional subjects.as they have the Indian origin & should be considered as potential resource for research in main stream medicine.
Thanx with Regards

To,
His Excellency, The President of India,
Honorable Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India.
Honorable Prime Minister of India
Respected Sir,
Nurses constitute the largest member in the health care delivery system in India and around the world. We are independnet, highly educated, and skilled healthcare experts who save lives every single day. We work hard and are dedicated to making differences in People’s lives. We are witnessing a Lot of brain drain which ultimately has led to acute shortage of nurses, inspite of starting a number of new nursing colleges. Nurses with B.Sc Nursing and M.Sc Nursing degree can be posted in rural areas to reach the unreached and serve the under served. Thereby preventing brain drain. Though we are rich in resources, we fail to recognize and utilize them.
NIMA PATHARDI’s Hunger Strike On 16th April, In protest Of BRMS/BRHC/BRHS course..
Despite protests from all over the nation, Union Health Ministry is going ahead with it’s plans to introduce BRMS/BRHC/BRHS course. The Course is a retrograde move in medical education,There are other options available to develop Rural Health care..
The Union Health Ministry backed MCI’s proposal is going to benefit Education Barons rather than Our Rural Population..
To protest against the Union Health Ministries move to introduce BRMS/BRHC/BRHS course, We are going on Hunger strike on 16th April 2010,at Tehsil Office Pathardi.
PRESIDENT

Government should give an oppurtunity for graduate nurses also because they are also studying anatomy, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, pharmacology etc in the curriculum. They can prescribe medicines. In developed countries graduate nurses has the right to diagnose and prescribe medicines they are known as nurse practitioners. In india ministry of health can conduct a course\ Exam to qualify as rural medical practitioner.
Dear friend Jayanta Bhowmick, plz go through the latest syllabus of BAMS on CCIM Link-http://www.ccimindia.org/curriculum_ayurveda_ug_syllbus_2009.html.Moreover BAMS syllabus has been integrated with aspects of modern medicine like Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Medicine, Surgery, ENT, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Geriatric Care, Psychiatry etc.. Swasthavritta is one of the subject in 2nd professional of BAMS curriculum, which purely deals with concepts and principles of preventive & Social Medicine / public health. It includes training on all aspects of Public Health like Personal Hygiene, Nutrition, Epidemiology, School Health Services, Biostatistics, National Health Programmes, MCH care, Adolescent health, Occupational health etc. In addition to this, all clinical subjects of BAMS put particular attention on preventive aspects of the treatment before giving curative treatment, which is a well known aspect even to the lay man.plz make the statement about the facts.

Since BAMS course does not teaches modern pharmacology and thus such doctors are not qualified to prescribe or practice modern medicine.
Crosspathy is nothing other than quackery. Crosspathy doctors are qualified to be called as quacks are their practice illegal and punishable by law. Anybody can file an FIR against them.
A doc can practice the system of medicine only in which he /she is qualified.
If anybody wants to practice Allopathy he needs to join a MBBS course and not BAMS/BHMS, etc.It is the basic fact.
DEAR FRIEND JAYANTA BOWMICK PLEASE CONTACT TI CCIM ABOUT BAMS CURICULAM AND CONFIRM FROM THEM ABOUT FACT THAT MODERN PHARMACILOGY IS INCLUDED/TEACHED IN BAMS SYLLABUS OR NOT.IF YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THIS THEN PLEASE FILED COURT CASE AGAINST ME AND MY FRIEND WHO ARE PRACTICING WITH MODERN SYSTEM.WE REPLY YOU IN THE COURT.I AM FROM HARYANA,AND BAMS GRADUATES FROM G.B.AYURVEDIC COLLEGE ROHTAK,HARYANA.PLEASE DO NOT MISGUIDE ANY ONE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY LEGAL DOCUMENTS.

Regards,
It is high time that this idiot govt. of India political monkeys stop playing around with us Indians. Be it city or rural areas. Both have become shit.
Who says rural areas dont get doctors. There are thousands of quacks who either have as a ward boy in hospitals or in some dispensary. They earn thousands. But unfortunately do not provide correct medical advice. why dont govt train them. It was effectively practiced in China. (Chinese-Bare foot doctors).
But silly (or may be smart & corrupt) govt. of India (bunch of monkeys) are busy identifying and starting various courses including BAMS, BUMS, and latest gimic the BRMS??!! What is going on ?? The person doing BRMS will become at par with any doctor and come to city to pursue MD…FUNNY. Where does RURAL HEALTH GO then??!!
These Politicians only want reasons to establish colleges so that they can secure prime property for hospitals at peanut price, get donations/grants from govt funds for their own luxury and also charge hefty fees from the poor Indians/Students.
Nobody really cares for health..Doctors today are over concentrated in cities and absent from rural areas..So in city overcrowding of doctors means no good practice….and in rural areas dispersed population with no good roads means patients cant come to you…so no good practice again…But these monkeys dont care..
Regards, Dr. Amol A.Bhurke
All u Guys, Seeking to be doctors, Beware…Practices are not working nowadys..50 Rs per patient and 20 patients a day makes me Rs.1000/- per day. Monthly Rs. 30000/- Now substract my electricity bill, shop rent or maintainence, medicines given by me(they are really costly nowadys)and see what remains. I can earn Rs.16000 to Rs.20000/- per month. Did I work so hard to become a doctor for that??!! In 1995 when I took admission it was not like that. Doctors were making good money..But these colleges and continued production of doctors by Govt of India..has only reduced my patients from 50-60 per day to 20 in less than 10 years!! (No matter how good you are the patients do get distributed, some for cheaper fees, others cause of borrow account and some find other doctor better. It happens with ALL practising doctors…so nobody finally remains with more than 20 patients!!
Even Americans, British now are sending the doctors back..
I am too late now, But you take wise decisions…
Take care
who we can get addmision in this course

Hi, if there is shortage of doctors and if the medicos are not willing for BRMS then why cant we try the B.Pharma,They Know very much about medicine and by giving them required tranning they are perfect for this……..and this take not too much of time. This is not required to place others degree holders for this job because every kind of degree have its own importance……….but B.Pharma holders have not a specific kind of job except as pharmacist, they helps to improve the quality of life of rural areas………

Hello Sir/madam,
This national pharmaceutical pricing authority is useless, because the government had not
Open any department in India which will provide reasonable MRP (maximum Retail Price) for medicines. Like batch number MRP is also important to protect medicine from unnecessary becoming expansive
Please arrange such department that can decide the MRP for each product according to
Purchase bill of pharmaceutical marketing companies or if they are manufacturer calculate properly the production cost. And provide the MRP along with batch numbers to the pharmaceutical company to control little bit lootmaar by pharma companies.
This is very important in poor country like India do not allow freely to anyone to print MRP on medicines whatever they want this will create more hunger for money to pharma companies
My brother has worked as Medical Representative in Pharmaceutical company and now he has his own company he is purchasing eye drops from Baddi(H.P.) and Ahmedabad at the rate of Rs1.50 each + packing and transportation charges came up to Rs1.00 each + excise duty Rs 2.0 and marketing cost came Rs 1/- each, approximately total cost came Rs 4/-to 5/- of each eye drop. And he is printing MRP Rs 87/- on each bile (eye drop packing) and Doctors also compel patients to purchase this higher cost drugs because doctors are taking commission up to Rs10 to Rs20 on each prescribed drugs. And 4-5% profit margin for chemist shop,
Remaining all amounts is profit of medicine supplier (medical suppliers called themselves companies without any manufacturing unit and earning huge profits
Recently he had launch copvit plus (B complex capsule) which he had purchase only of fifty paisa per capsule and printed MRP is Rs105 on packing for ten capsule, so much huge profit on it.
He had invest only two lacs rupees in his business and within three years he had earn
Three crore. And he always saying that customer thought is that the higher MRP on product means the medicine is of best quality, this is mind set of customers, whether these product are branded or of sub-standard.
With this huge profit he has newly build hotel at karol bagh (WEA 8A/7G Block) and there also he supplying Bear and wine to his client without any Bar license.
And almost 95% of medicine suppliers and marketing companies had stop supplying
Life saving drugs because this product gave them no profit.
So if government need that there should be no shortage of Life saving drugs, and
Medicine should available at reasonable rates, Drugs and chemical ministry has to
Increase the percentage from 300% to 500% so that greedy businessmen can take
some interest in Life saving drugs also. And make limit up to 800% margin on
General medicine {Non life saving drugs} so that the MRP cost should not reach
Higher without any reason.
Please send this idea to ministry and jaago grahak jaago{consumer form}also because
They are just showing ads on biscuits and on small items and doesn’t understand the
Main cause of increasing rate on medicine and telling us for bargaining which doesn’t work
Because Doctors prescribe and compel to purchase that particular products.
Dr. Rakhi Sharma of Mahendergarh eye Hospital (Haryana) is earning Rs 1.7 Lacs per month as commission at the rate of 22 rupees on each eye drop.
His Company name is:
Synod Pharmaceutical (p) Ltd.
PN28, pratap Nagar Metro station,
Pratap Nagar, DELHI-110007
Mob:9871378282
please arrange some website and email and that should be published on news paper
regularly so that common people can also file complain or gave some idea to government officer and ministers because they are not from medical profession that’s by unable to
understand problems and cause of rising price of medicine.
IT IS ” SENSIBLE ? ? ? ” DESSISION TAKEN BY GOVT. OF INDIA , EXPECTATIONS ARE ONLY THAT , THINK SENSIBLY ABOUT ” COMMON MAN ” . GOD BLESS TO PRESIDENT, P.M. & COUNCILS OF MINISTERS FROM APEX OF HEART.

Unani and ayurveda docs can conduct surgery: Madras HC
CHENNAI: The Madras high court has said registered practitioners in siddha, ayurveda, homeopathy and unani are eligible to practise surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthesiology, ENT, ophthalmology, etc.
Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulla, passing orders on a contempt of court petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Siddha Medical Graduates Association, also said penal action against such practitioners who dabbled in allopathy should be “dropped forthwith.”
The ruling runs contrary to a recent order delivered by another judge on a petition filed by two unani practitioners who sought similar relief. In February this year, Justice K K Sasidharan had held that practitioners of Indian system of medicines should not practise allopathy, and that there was nothing wrong if police take action against those who attempt to practice allopathy without valid qualification.
While passing orders on Thursday, Justice Kalifulla took note of a June 29 circular of the government, which, citing section 17(3)B of the Indian Medicine Central Council Act 1970, said institutionally qualified practitioners of siddha, ayurveda, unani and homeopathy are eligible to practise the respective system with modern scientific medicine “including surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthesiology, ENT, etc. based on the training and teaching.”
The government’s latest stand on the issue smacks of ambiguity while dealing with alternative systems of medicine which it seeks to promote even while claiming to check illegal practitioners. The recent crackdown had seen several traditional practioners being booked for prescribing allopathic drugs.
brms course should offered to student working on village lavel by mci. some patient sufer in village due to absence of mbbs docter hence reqested to you to inform me
respected sir,
myself b pharma graduate, my question is why we people are not allowed to do so?wats the need to open this new course, why govt has not done before.
BRMS Course is brain child of Ketan Desai.. New “dukandari” in Medical Education..! Oppose it..!!
AYUSH Doctors (BAMS.BUMS,BSMS & BHMS) Doctors are victims of corrupt & illogical medical education system of India..
