The Microsoft Office Outlook team has released a series of cumulative updates to improve performance and reliability. Outlook team consolidated all these updates into a single package. This update contains a significant number of new performance-focused improvements for Outlook users. After installing these updates, Outlook users will definitely feel a high level of performance  improvement in Outlook 2007.

Outlook team especially focused on the areas of starting up and shutting down Outlook, switching between folders with large numbers of messages, calendar reliability and consistency, and general responsiveness of the application when performing common tasks around managing your e-mail, calendar, and other information. In short, we believe your daily experience with Outlook will be greatly improved with the installation of this Cumulative Update.

The Most important change is made in local storage engine of Outlook. Both Personal Folders files (PSTs) and Cached Exchange Stores (OSTs) are built upon the same underlying storage engine. Outlook update improved the general reading and writing characteristics of the PST so that less is demanded from the disk to perform the same general operations in Outlook.

POP and IMAP users will noticed that Outlook retrieve most newest mails first. IMAP mail users will notice that downloading message bodies no longer stops Outlook from responding to additional user commands.

Immediately after you install the SP2 update, the first startup of Outlook will not be fast because Outlook must update internal PST data structures that are used in our optimizations. This is a one-time cost, however, and it affects just the initial startup.

The responsiveness of Outlook will improve after this dialog box closes. If you choose to create a new profile and resynchronize your mail, the storage upgrade happens dynamically as new content is added to your new local data file.
