Over the last few years online security threats has grown dramatically. A computer user connected to internet and don’t have firewall installed then it’s a real concern for that computer user. Firewalls installed three years back are not suitable in current context and new threats and attacks. A firewall is a system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private computer network. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet (often described as intranets). All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.

A firewall helps protect your mobile PC by preventing unauthorized users from gaining access to your computer through the Internet or a network. It acts as a barrier that checks all incoming information, and then either blocks the information or allows it to come through. All Microsoft Windows operating systems come with a firewall, and you can make sure it’s turned on.
To activate the Windows XP Firewall
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections.
- In the Network Connections window, under Network Tasks, click Change Windows Firewall Settings.
- In the Windows Firewall dialog box, on the General tab, ensure that On is selected.

Always use a good and trusted anti virus program to prevent the security thefts. Update your anti virus software once in a week. Always purchase a new anti virus software because most anti virus software comes with one year free subscription.
Use firewall to protect you from the Internet hackers.
Always update your browser version.
When sending instant messages and emails, be mind full of what information you type in, unless you truly know the person on the other end.
If your friend sends you an email with an attachment (picture, a program etc.) always scan for viruses before you use it, You can’t assume that all your friends are updating their anti-viruses.
Always download from well known and well solicited web sites. These kinds of sites are less likely to have files that contains viruses, example: download.com, ZDnet.com, Microsoft.com, etc…
You should know that on some well known web sites, sometimes have spy in there software ( with the exception of software drivers for your printer, mouse etc. ), or you may want to download a game from an advertisement and find out that several other crap/programs that you don’t want came along with it (after you’ve downloaded it). its a good idea to know what software you have in your computer, so that if you need to remove something, like unwanted software, you know what’s important and what’s not.
