AT&T Child Locator Service Powered by Virtual Earth

AT&T launched a new service called “FamilyMap” , this service allow parents to track their child location. Parents will give their children an AT&T device, then login to the FamilyMap web site for viewing where their children are on a Microsoft Virtual Earth map. The portal has a number of features such as schedules, history and places considered safe for the children. All of this information can be slapped onto a Virtual Earth map chalked full of map data, aerial image and photography, but perhaps most crucially in this circumstance our high resolution Bird’s Eye photography which really illustrates an area of interest by providing an angled view of a location for additional context.

View 3D Models with Virtual Earth-3DVia Microsoft is working very hard to make their online services more powerful as well as more featured rich. In this series Microsoft has added 3DVIA (Beta) to its virtual earth that brings your ideas to life in 3D! Imagine, create and share 3D models within Microsoft Virtual Earth!

  • Imagine your own 3D models
  • Create a realistic visual experience in 3D within the Virtual Earth environment
  • Share your 3D models on the web

The video embedded at the bottom of this article comes to illustrate what 3DVia can bring to Virtual Earth 3D. End users are of course free to add their own content to Virtual Earth by using the software. But since Virtual Earth 3D is still in Beta mode, they should also expect to run at least into minor issues.

I haven’t seen many models built out, but what I’ve seen have been okay – just okay. If you have some sweet models that you’re proud of send the link to your collection. I had issues installing 3DVia to the point that 3DVia just rendered a black screen. My RAM had vanquished and I had to work in a subzero fridge so my CPU didn’t catch my paltry video card aflame

3DVia is a free download from Microsoft. You can get it on Live Search Maps when you click 3D in the navigation control (there’s an option while you install the 3D plug-in); or, download it directly from the Virtual Earth-3DVia Download Page.
